DESCRIPTION: APW - Waltham, P.S. Bartlett, pre-Civil War era, Model 1857, 11J, 18S, massive 18K gold (tested) OF original R&A (Robbins & Appleton) case, rear with inner latch which is as-made with no provision for release, gold cuvette, "Appleton Tracy & Co." marked white enamel dial, KWKS, gilt mvt, s#17321. Gross weight of assembled watch 92.6 dwt (144.0 g). This early example is from a production run listed in Waltham records as having been made in March of 1859. Comes with a key and in a fitted leather "Strawbridge & Clothier Philadelphia" marked box, this firm founded in 1868. A superb original pre-Civil War example, with a notably massive gold case.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, nearly mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, bright lustrous plates, fine scratch to right side of barrel bridge, fine scratch to portion of regulator index, few micro-fine scratches and small mild haze spots elsewhere; flawless dial; excellent hour and minute hands of mismatched colors, fair seconds-hand with near complete finish loss; case shows little wear, scattered fine scratches and pinprick nicks to rear, fine chattered scratches to cuvette, small soft dent to lower rear near shoulder with corresponding mild dent to cuvette, very slight minimal soft dent toward upper-left of rear evident as mild ripple to reflected light, rear hinge missing one end-cap; tight bow; glass crystal with scattered fine scratches. Box in fine condition, exterior with scattered scratches and worn areas, interior liner with some foxing and with tearing over the hinge area, hinge with a bit of play, good button latch.
